Product Safety Regulations to Prevent Toppling Furniture

To help prevent injuries and fatalities caused by toppling furniture, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has introduced new product safety regulations, effective from 4 May 2025.

These new laws aim to protect toddlers and young children from the dangers of unsecured furniture in the home, such as cupboards and wardrobes, by securely anchoring them to walls to reduce the risk of tipping.

For more information, please view the ACCC Product Safety Guidelines.

Which Furniture Should Be Secured?

Freestanding household furniture can be dangerous if it falls or topples over. This type of furniture includes:

  • bookcases
  • chests of drawers and wardrobes
  • cabinets
  • entertainment units
  • unsecured televisions
  • hall tables, buffets and sideboards
